The Narrabri Portrait Prize: Local Lives
Celebrating the people who live in, have shaped, and remain deeply connected to the Narrabri Shire.
Entries are now open for the inaugural Narrabri Portrait Prize. Artists are invited to submit painted, drawn or mixed media portraits of people with a strong connection to Narrabri and the region.
This prize celebrates the face and stories that shape this place. Those who live here, have lived here, or remain deeply connected to the region.
Selected finalists will be exhibited at the Tourist Hotel Narrabri as part of a public exhibition celebrating regional storytelling through portraiture.

The prize is open to artists aged 18 years and over from anywhere in Australia. You do not need to live in the Narrabri Shire to enter.

Your portrait subject (“sitter”) must have a strong connection to the Narrabri Shire. This could include current or former residents, people with family ties to the region, or individuals who have significantly contributed to or shaped the community.

Yes. Self-portraits are welcome, provided you have a genuine connection to the Narrabri Shire.

Absolutely! As long as they meet the eligibility criteria and you have their permission to enter the work.

No. The prize is specifically for portraits of real people.

Painted, drawn and mixed media portraits are eligible. Photography, digital-only artworks and sculptures are not accepted.

No. Artists can choose whether or not their work is available for sale during the exhibition.

The entry fee is $25 AUD per artwork.

Artists may submit one artwork only.

Yes. Finalist works must be gallery-ready, suitably framed (where appropriate), and fitted with secure hanging hardware.

Works must not exceed 100cm on the longest side, including the frame.

Finalists are selected by the judging panel based on the digital image submitted during the entry process.

Finalist works will be exhibited at the Tourist Hotel Narrabri in October 2026.

Yes. Visitors to the exhibition will be invited to vote for their favourite artwork, with a $500 People’s Choice Award presented at the conclusion of the exhibition.

Artists will receive the sale price minus a 25% commission retained by the organisers/venue.

Yes, provided you have permission from the sitter to use the reference material.

You’ll need to provide a short statement (maximum 100 words) explaining the sitter’s connection to the Narrabri Shire.
